Clive Young, Director of General Academic and Professional Studies, GCU

As Director of GAPS, Dr Clive Young’s responsibilities range from e-learning, through staff development and training to the development and delivery of innovative academic programmes such as work-based learning and the flexible Caledonian Degree. A learning technologist by profession, Dr Young has a strong interest in researching and developing visually rich learning environments, including the use of video and other media. While Head of e-Learning at UMIST, Manchester, he co-founded and managed Click and Go Video, which identified the local technological, infrastructural and pedagogical barriers that inhibit the use of streaming media in teaching and learning. The project developed practical and resource-efficient tools and educational frameworks. This was disseminated via a high-profile web site (www.clickandgovideo.ac.uk), a series of popular workshops and a well-received handbook Video streaming: a guide for educational development (Thornhill. S, Asensio. M, Young. C eds 2002).

The project (now based at Glasgow Caledonian University) is now investigating how to make video and audio inclusive and accessible to users have sensory disability. VideoAktiv, an ambitious workshop and case study programme on the use of video streaming is being planned for UK and hopefully other European countries. In addition to the handbook cited above, Dr Young has published widely in this area and is has been active in the development of the UK user community. Dr Young was recently invited to participate in a joint JISC-SURF (UK and NL) Expert Group to discuss how to promote the educational use of streaming media in these two countries.
