In the UK, Click and Go Video, funded by JISC identified the local technological, infrastructural, pedagogical and accessibility barriers that inhibit the use of streaming media in teaching and learning. The project developed practical and resource-efficient tools and educational frameworks. This was disseminated via a high-profile web site (www.clickandgovideo.ac.uk), a series of popular workshops and a well-received handbook Video streaming: a guide for educational development (Thornhill. S, Asensio. M, Young. C eds 2002).

ICTOL (Faculty of Arts) and the University University Educational Centre Groningen take part in the project on behalf of the University of Groningen (the Netherlands). Both institutions have been involved in innovative use of streaming media in education for the last several years. Examples are Davideon (use of online audiovisual archives) and Didiclass (use of videocases in teacher training).

At the Vrije Universiteit, two departments are involved in VideoAktiv: the Centre for Educational Training, Assessment and Research (CETAR) and the Audiovisual Centre (AVC). The Centre for Education, Training and Research supports and co-ordinates the use of information and communication technology in education at the Vrije Universiteit. The Centre consists of 70 staff members with a wide and varied expertise on pedagogical and technological matters. The Audiovisual Centre offers photographical services, graphical design, media services, technical services, and rental services. AVC holds 30 staff members, and is involved in several media projects at the university.

Vidéoscop is the audiovisual and multimedia research and production department of Université Nancy 2. Created in 1978, the unit specialises in experimenting and producing audiovisual materials and multimedia applications for higher education, vocational training and the public sector in general. In VideoAktiv, the Videoscop team works together with the university's ICT in education department to organise the staff development programme.

The University of the Basque Country (UPV-EHU) participates in VideoAktiv through the research team Grupo Multimedia of the Engineering School of Bilbao. The research group has worked since the last years in the different projects relative to the integration of the video/multimedia in online higher education.

ATiT is a Belgian audio-visual and information technologies SME, specialising in the integration of Information and Communications Technologies in the Education and Culture sectors. ATiT staff offer project management, technology integration as well as training and consultancy services to the education and training sector. Staff from ATiT has a long experience in production of educational media and designs, produces and evaluates multimedia based training materials.
