Different uses of video will be dealt with, such as incorporating video as a learning resource in a digital learning environment, using video during lectures or giving students the task of producing videos themselves.

A number of examples will be highlighted, illuminating the value of video in higher education, followed by a brief introduction to the technical aspects of streaming video.

Next, participants will get the opportunity to decide for themselves how they want to use video in their own courses, and choose those modules that will best fit their interests and needs. Modules will provide you with the knowledge and practical skills that enable you to carry out your own video project.

Among the modules offered are:

- How to design assignments related to video materials

- Making assignments and videos available in a Blackboard environment

- Digitising analogue video materials

- Legal issues concerning privacy, copyrights et cetera

- Searching for video materials on the internet

- Using video in PowerPoint

- Produce your own video materials or hire professional expertise

- Producing instructional videos on computer applications

- Recording lectures During the workshop you will work at your own pace.

The available equipment will enable you to learn how to digitise analogue videos and record and edit your own videos. Training materials are designed so as to help you realise your own video project. During the workshop session trainers will provide pedagogical as well as technical advice. After the workshop the course materials remain available via the internet.

Objectives

The workshop aims to provide participants with:

- an insight in the value video may add to higher education and to their own courses;

- the practical knowledge and skills needed to use video in education.

For each participant the specific outcome of the workshop will depend on the training modules chosen.

For whom is the workshop intended?

All teachers working at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and the University of Groningen, those without prior experience in the use of video in education as well as those who want to extend their competencies, are welcome to apply for participation. Technical knowledge about streaming video is not required. Participants should, however, be familiar with the basics of the digital learning environment (e.g. Blackboard) used in their institution.

The workshop has been developed as part of the European VideoAktiv Project by the University of Groningen and the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.
